BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2012) - On Saturday, the Mercy College women's soccer squad started off the 2012 campaign on a positive note as newcomers Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jennifer Vega (Norwalk, Calif.) scored two goals each to help the Mavericks down Pace University, 4-2.

The Setters jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Geena Kooner scored in the 23rd minute of the game. It was then Vega's turn as she notched the equalizer in the 41st minute unassisted. One minute later, Jillian Ferro scored to put Pace back on top, 2-1, right before halftime.

Following the intermission, it was all Mavericks. Vega scored her second marker of the day in the 58th minute. Mena was responsible for the assist. Nine minutes later, Mena found herself on the other end of a pass as she scored her first goal in a Mercy uniform. Dawn Hickey (Bohemia, N.Y.) had the assist.

Mena then had her second goal find the back of the netting in the 80th minute of play.

In goal, sophomore Stephanie Casey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) made her Mercy debut, receiving the win. With only two shots on goal, which were goals, the Mercy defense came up superb today in aiding the offensive strikers to secure the 4-2 triumph.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to the field tomorrow when they play Saint Anselm in Day 2 of the Pace Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
