Field Hockey Narrowly-Edged in Season Opener by Drew, 1-0
Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2012) - On Saturday, the Mercy College field hockey team was seven minutes away from heading into a scoreless overtime, before Drew University netted the game's only goal to lock down a 1-0 victory. Drew improves to 1-0 on the year, while Mercy falls to 0-1 overall.
The Mavericks exhibited some terrific defense holding the Rangers at bay throughout the first 63 minutes of the contest. Last season's NCAA Division II national saves-per-game champion Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) was in mid-season form as she recorded a whopping 18 saves today.
On the offensive end, sophomore Yolie Nyero (Carlisle, Pa.) had two shots (one coming on goal), while junior-transfer Nicole Bencsik (Telford, Pa.) had one.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow when they face Swarthmore as they wrap up their competition in the Drew Fall Festival. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m.
