Women's Soccer Battles Molloy Tough in 2012 ECC Opener
Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2012) - On Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team received goals from junior Lisa Shaw (South Pasadena, Calif.) and sophomore MacKenzie Cochrane (Mission Viejo, Calif.), however, it wasn't enough as East Coast Conference-opponent Molloy College edged past the Mavericks in overtime, 3-2.
Shaw kicked off the scoring and put Mercy on the scoreboard first with a goal in the sixth minute of play. Junior Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif.) had the assist. The game stayed at this score as halftime approached.
Following the intermission, the Mavericks went ahead, 2-0, when Cochrane found the back of the netting in the 59th minute. Shaw fed her the ball for the assist.
Eight minutes later, the Lions cut their deficit in half when Sami Saad scored on a header.
With nine minutes remaining in regulation, Molloy found the equalizer off the foot of Alexa De La Torre. Then, 37 seconds into the first overtime period, Saad notched her second marker of the contest to give Molloy the 3-2 victory.
In goal for Mercy, freshman netminder Cyera Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) made four saves.
In corner kicks, Mercy held the advantage over Molloy, 2-1.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Friday, Sept. 21 as they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to square off against the newest member of the ECC, Roberts Wesleyan College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
