White and Gebhardt Dominate Goldey-Beacom for Volleyball Win

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) and junior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Pine Bush, N.Y.) smacked 20 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the Mercy College volleyball team to victory at home over Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday.
Mercy defeated Goldey-Beacom in straight sets (25-13, 25-23, 25-21) in the first matchup of the day's tri-match. Goldey-Beacom then fell to Southern New Hampshire University before the Penmen swept Mercy by scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-16 in the concluding match.
Mercy moves to 2-5 with the split, while SNHU improves to 6-4 and Goldey-Beacom drops to 4-5.
Mercy 3, Goldey-Beacom 0
The Mavericks came out firing in the first match, going up 4-0 before the Lightning tied things up at 6-6. Mercy responded immediately with a 7-1 run and was never challenged, going on to take the set with ease. The second set was fairly even throughout as neither team led by more than two and the score was tied as late as 22-22 before Mercy closed things out for the 2-0 match lead.
The third set seemed to be shaping up the same way, with only one two-point lead until the Lightning went up 12-11, when the Mavericks took another 7-1 run to storm to a commanding 18-13 lead and held on to win their first home match of the year.
White recorded her 20 kills on an impressive .308 hitting percentage while Gebhardt smacked her 10 on an incredible .692 percentage. Sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made a career-high 39 assists on the team's whopping 46 kills, while junior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) led the team with 13 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Kadi McCoy (Dallastown, Pa.) led the Lightning with 13 kills and six digs while senior setter Monica Dempsey (Secaucus, N.J.) made 13 assists.
SNHU 3, Mercy 0
After sweeping Goldey-Beacom in the day's second match, SNHU and Mercy faced off in the tri-match finale. Mercy took a few short leads early in the first set but SNHU rattled off seven straight points to take a 16-10 lead. The Mavericks pulled some of that back but never got closer than three, finally falling 25-21.
The second set looked to be well in hand for Mercy after an 8-2 run midway through, but with two points standing in the Mavericks' way the Penmen ran off another six straight points to come within one of set point themselves at 24-23. Mercy came up with a big kill to even things at 24-24, but SNHU took the final two points to win.
One set from victory, the Penmen wasted no time in taking a 4-0 lead but the Mavericks responded by tying it up at 4-4. SNHU slowly built its lead back up, however, and 16-14 was the closest Mercy would get again as the Penmen finished things off a 9-2 run to win the set and match.
White led the Mavericks with 13 kills as junior middle blocker Nicole Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y.) set a career high with 10 kills on a ridiculous .714 hitting percentage. Ronan made another 33 assists while White and Hopkins each picked up seven digs and freshman middle blocker Hana Brucaj (Shruboak, N.Y.) made a career-high 2.0 total blocks.
Freshman middle hitter Emma Houlihan Shoreham, N.Y.) led SNHU's balanced attack with 10 kills while freshman setter Catherine Cotton (Murphy, Texas) made 26 assists and sophomore libero Kendra Mikuta (Orland Park, Ill.) recorded 12 digs. Houlihan added 2.5 total blocks while freshman outside hitter Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.) served up four aces.
Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will host the University of the District of Columbia (4-5) on Tuesday, Sept. 18 in their East Coast Conference opener. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
