PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2012) – Sophomore forward Andrew Levy (Bayside, N.Y.) and senior forward William Koki (Aurora, Colo.) combined on the Mercy College men's soccer team's goal in a 1-1 draw with Holy Family University on Tuesday afternoon.

Mercy's record now stands at 5-1-2 overall and 0-1 in the East Coast Conference while Holy Family's sits at 3-3-1 (1-1 in the CACC).  Mercy is ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA East region.

The game kicked off 20 minutes early to avoid the impending inclement weather, but severe winds still had a serious effect on the game, in some cases blowing high shots behind the players taking them.

Neither team showed much attacking threat early on, although junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) did make two soft saves in the opening 11 minutes.  Mercy slowly built up an attack, eventually forcing three saves of senior goalkeeper Kelly Diaz (Palisades Park, N.J.) over the final 20 minutes of the half.

Junior forward Ransmond Aboagye (Bronx, N.Y.) really started to come on as the first half ended and the second got underway, putting a shot on frame in the waning minutes of the first stanza and firing two shots just over the crossbar in the opening minutes of the second half as well as having another blocked minutes later.

Mercy got a big chance in the 62nd minute as sophomore Danny Leon Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.) launched a free kick from at least 30 yards out past Diaz and off the left goalpost.  Diaz was injured attempting to make the save and was forced to leave, and just minutes later Leon fired another shot on frame that sophomore backup goalkeeper Nick Aglira (Churchville, Pa.) punched outside, where Koki was waiting to pass it back to Levy at the top of the box, where he fired it into the upper right-hand corner for the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Mavericks, their lead would not hold through the remainder of the game as Papas stepped out to punch a ball away in the 82nd minute but senior midfielder Jeffrey Wimsey (Philadelphia, Pa.) trapped it as he ran onto it and floated a lob over Papas into the left side of the net for the equalizer to send the Mavericks into their sixth overtime game this season.

The first overtime period brought a slew of attacks as Aboagye led an assault on Aglira that resulted in three saves and a blocked shot while Holy Family got off a shot on goal and had another blocked as well.  Neither could break through in the second overtime either and the match ended in a 1-1 draw despite Mercy's 20-10 shot advantage.

Aboagye ended the day with three shots on goal (seven total) while Leon added two on frame and Papas made four saves between the posts.  No Tiger recorded more than one shot on goal, while Diaz made three saves in the 61:30 he played and Aglira made four in his 48:30 of game time.

Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will return to conference action as they travel to Roberts Wesleyan College (2-3) on Friday, Sept. 21 for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.  Follow the action via Live stats and video.
