Box Score 2 WALTHAM, Mass. (Sept. 22, 2012) – Junior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Pine Bush, N.Y.) was named to the Northeast 10/East Coast Conference Challenge All-Tournament Team for her performances for the Mercy College volleyball team on Saturday.
The Mavericks dropped a four-set match to host Bentley University in the morning by scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 and were swept 3-0 by Merrimack College in the afternoon, dropping their record to 2-8 (0-1) on the season.
Mercy 1, Bentley 3
The teams traded points all through the first set but the Falcons finally looked ready to break the deadlock with a 20-17 lead. The Mavericks had other plans, however, and rallied behind four kills from sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.), going on an 8-1 run to take the set and 1-0 match lead.
Bentley held the edge through the first half of the second set but Mercy stuck close and led as late as 20-19, but the Falcons avenged their first-set loss in scoring six of the final seven points to take the set 25-21 and level the match score.
The Falcons took some time to separate from the Mavericks in the third set but eventually built up a 21-13 lead and cruised to the 25-20 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Another early Bentley lead proved to be just a bit too much for Mercy to overcome in the fourth set, as the Mavericks were within two at 14-12 but five unanswered Falcons points put the set and match out of reach.
White led the match with 16 kills and 15 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while Gebhardt added 14 kills on a .312 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made 37 assists and junior defensive specialist Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif.) recorded 12 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Buckner (San Marino, Calif.) and freshman right-side hitter Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo.) led the Falcons with 14 and 12 kills, respectively, with Buscher adding a team-high 14 digs to also post a double-double. Freshman setter Kyana Miller (San Diego, Calif.) made 39 assists and sophomore middle blocker Simone Silvera (Bolingbrook, Ill.) paced the squad with 3.5 of the team's 11.0 total blocks.
Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will return to conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 25 as they host LIU Post (8-8, 0-2) at 7:00 p.m.
