Women's Soccer Narrowly-Edged by NYIT in ECC Battle
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2012) - On Wednesday afternoon, the New York Institute of Technology ventured to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to take on East Coast Conference-opponent Mercy College in women's soccer action. The Bears of NYIT barely edged out the Mavericks, 2-1 at Mavericks Field.
With the win, the Bears improved to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the league. Following the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in the ECC.
Former Mercy player and current NYIT forward Christina Boccio netted the game's first goal with a tally in the 14th minute. From the right side of the field, she punched it into the lower-left corner of the frame to give NYIT a 1-0 advantage.
The Bears struck for another goal in the 29th minute when NYIT was awarded a penalty kick. Heather Kasper converted on the PK and increased the guests' lead to 2-0.
Throughout the rest of the contest, the Mavericks battled hard to get chances and sophomore Taylor Horgan (Long Beach, N.Y.) made good on one of those as she scored the Mavericks' first tally in the 62nd minute of action. Junior Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif.), who has been an absolute goal-scoring and assist-distributing machine this year, was credited with the assist.
Both goalkeepers saw tons of action today as NYIT netminder Brianna Bolletieri made 10 saves, while Mercy senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) notched six saves.
On the afternoon, Mercy outshot the Bears, 22-15, and held the advantage in corner kicks (3-2).
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to the field on Saturday when they travel to Queens College to battle the Knights in ECC action. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
