Hopkins Records Second 20-Dig Game of Season as Volleyball Hosts ECC Rival Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2012) – Junior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) recorded her second 20-dig game of the season as the Mercy College volleyball team hosted East Coast Conference rival Molloy College tonight.

The Mavericks were not on their game tonight while the Lions just got better with each set and posted the 3-0 sweep, improving their record to 5-10 overall and 3-1 in the ECC while Mercy drops to 2-11 (0-3).

Molloy quickly built up a 19-8 lead in the first set and cruised to the 25-19 victory.  Mercy bounced back in the second set to lead as late as 18-15 but the Lions regained the lead and the score ended up tied at 23-23 before Molloy closed it out to take the 2-0 match lead.  Molloy jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third set and stretched it out to 20-9 before finishing things off with a four-point run to win, 25-13.

Hopkins finished with 20 digs and two kills on just three total attacks while sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) led the Mavericks with 13 kills and sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made 24 assists.

Sophomore right-side hitter Shannon Appel (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) led the Lions with 10 kills while senior setter Jennifer Koelbel (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore setter Kerry MacDonald (Floral Park, N.Y.) combined for 27 assists, with MacDonald also adding a team-high nine digs.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will head to Queens College (1-12, 1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 1:00 p.m. opening serve.
