Efficient Offense Not Enough for Men's Soccer at ECC Rival Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2012) – The Mercy College men's soccer team held and 8-5 shot advantage and put an impressive seven on frame but it was not enough as East Coast Conference rival Queens College scored the game's only goal in the 69th minute to win, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Mercy drops to 7-2-2 overall and 2-2 in the ECC while Queens improves to 4-2-2 (2-1-1).
Neither team could gain much of an advantage through the opening minutes of the first half, with junior midfielder Daniel Iamiceli (Ossining, N.Y.) forcing the first save of the game in the 32nd minute and another in the 38th minute for the only three from either team in the first half.
Queens slowly built up its own attack in the second half and finally broke through in the 69th minute as senior back Grant Edick (Clearwater, Fla.) received a pass in the box from junior midfielder Sardar Karabay (Flushing, N.Y.) and slotted it into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks staged a furious rally almost immediately, with senior forward and ECC-leading goalscorer William Koki (Aurora, Colo.) ripping two shots on goal less than a minute later and junior back Luis Perez (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) getting a chance at a penalty shortly after, but none fell. The Mavericks would add another two shots, one on goal, and force a corner kick in the next four minute before the Knights settled at the back. Senior forward Ernest Afful (Columbus, Ohio) had a chance to tie things up in the 89th minute but his shot was saved and despite another corner kick the Mavericks could not force overtime and left empty-handed.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Geoghegan (Naas, Cty Kildare, Ireland) made seven saves in the shutout while junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) made one in the Mavericks' net.
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will look to bounce back with a statement win against No. 2 LIU Post (9-0, 4-0) at Mavericks Field on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 4:00 p.m.
