Vega Tallies Third Goal of Season Versus Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 4, 2012) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer team received a game-tying goal in the 74th minute of play from junior Jennifer Vega (Norwalk, Calif.) versus Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn. However, the Owls were able to score the eventual game-winner to secure a 2-1 victory.

The Owls improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Mavericks fell to 1-2 overall.

The Owls' Sarah Brochu scored the match's first marker in the 65th minute. Vega found the equalizer nine minutes later off a feed from MacKenzie Cochrane (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Vega fired the ball to the right of the goalkeeper and into the back of the netting.

Suzanne Pires scored the game-winner for the Owls in the 85th minute of regulation.

Southern Connecticut barely outshot the Mavericks (10-9), while corner kicks were tied at 3-3.

Mercy sophomore Stephanie Casey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) made five saves over the 65 minutes she saw in net.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Friday when they fly down to Tampa, Fla. to take on Flagler in the Tampa Tournament. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
