Women's Soccer Nearly Outlasts Flagler in Univ. of Tampa Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2012) - On Friday afternoon, the Mercy College women's soccer squad headed down to Tampa, Fla. to square off against Flagler College in the University of Tampa Tournament. Flagler narrowly edged out the Mavericks, 3-2, with a goal in the 76th minute. With the win, Flagler improved to 4-0 overall. Following the defeat, Mercy dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Mercy kicked off the scoring early when junior Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif.) netted one in the eighth minute of play. Fellow junior Jennifer Vega (Norwalk, Calif.) was responsible for the assist. Seven minutes later, Flagler knotted the score at 1-all when Cory Amend scored the equalizer.

Mercy junior Jackie Karras (Nesconset, N.Y.) notched her first goal of the 2012 season in the 15th minute, when she received a pass from Vega. Vega finished with two assists on the day.

A Flagler goal in the 37th minute tied the score once again at 2-2, and then in the 76th minute, Jessica Jagielski recorded the go-ahead goal.

For Mercy, Mena scored her third goal on the year. In net, freshman Cyera Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) made two saves.
