SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) just missed her first 20-kill match and second double-double of the season in the first of the Mercy College volleyball team's pair of matches earlier today.

The Mavericks fell, 3-1, to Chestnut Hill College in their first match and were swept by tri-match host Le Moyne College in their second, bringing their record to 0-3 on the season.  Chestnut Hill improves to 3-5 after splitting its matches while Le Moyne moves up to 4-2 after sweeping both matches.

Chestnut Hill 3, Mercy 1

Mercy racked up a whopping 45 kills in the first match but was undone by 51 errors (42 attacking, nine service).  The Mavericks exploded out of the gates as junior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Pine Bush, N.Y.) served her team to a 6-0 lead before the Griffins picked up their game and tied the score at 10-10.  The teams traded points until the very end, when White smashed two clutch kills to take the set, 25-23, and the 1-0 match lead.

White started the second set off with a third straight kill as the Mavericks built up a 10-5 lead but once again let Chestnut Hill even the score, this time at 12-12.  The Griffins took the lead shortly after and extended it to 23-14 on eight unanswered points.  The Mavericks were not finished yet, though, staging a seven-point rally with junior libero Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif.) serving, but the Griffins finally picked up the last two points they needed to bring the match level.

The third set saw the Griffins jump out to an early lead which they would not relinquish at any point, although Mercy again staged a late rally to come within five points in the end, including three straight service aces from White before a service error closed the set out at 25-20.

One set from victory, Chestnut Hill wasted no time in the fourth set, going up 7-0 at the start and finishing the match with a 25-18 victory.

White finished the match with team-highs in kills (19) and digs (nine), while senior setter Kassy Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y.) made 37 assists.  Zubiate served up a match-high five aces as well.

Freshman middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) and junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) broke into double digits with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while sophomore setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) recorded 30 assists and freshman defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) made 15 digs.

Le Moyne 3, Mercy 0

The Mavericks never quite got things going in the second match, totaling just one more kill than errors (20-19) over the three games while Le Moyne could not have hit any better with a .397 attack percentage.

The Dolphins opened up a 10-3 lead in the first game and finished it off with 10 of the final 11 points for the 25-10 victory.  Mercy bounced back in the second set, winning the first three points, before Le Moyne recovered and rattled off another 10-1 run en route to a 25-13 victory and 2-0 match lead.  Finally, the Dolphins jumped out to another 10-3 lead before Mercy fought back within three on multiple occasions.  However, the Mavericks would get no closer than 15-12, ultimately falling 25-16.

White again led the Mavericks in kills with seven, as did junior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) with seven digs.  Phillips made 16 assists.

Senior outside hitter Allison Hebel (Greenlawn, N.Y.) led the match with 12 kills as did senior outside hitter Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y.) with eight digs, while sophomore setter Megan Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y.) made 31 assists.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will look to bounce back against Post University (1-5) in their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
