Men's Basketball Travels to Long Island to Spar with ECC-Leading LIU Post; Lawrence Records Career-High 21 Points

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2013) - On Wednesday evening, the Mercy College men's basketball team ventured to Brookville, Long Island to square off against the undefeated, East Coast Conference-topping LIU Post Pioneers. LIU Post defeated the Mavericks by a final score of 90-71, improving its record to 11-3 (6-0 ECC). Mercy slipped to 1-13 (0-6 ECC).

Midway through the opening period, the Mavericks held their own against the first place Pioneers. With 10:18 remaining, Mercy rookie guard Nate Stitchell (Coventry, R.I.) nailed a three-pointer to cut the Mavericks' deficit to 26-21.

At one point during the latter portion of the first half, the Mavericks hit three straight three-pointers and began to really dig into the Pioneers' lead. With 1:56 left, LIU Post led, 42-39. The Pioneers then knocked out a 7-0 run to close out the opening half.

After halftime, the Pioneers tried to distance themselves from the Mavericks. Beginning at 14:51, the hosts had mounted a 10-point lead, one they would never relinquish.

For the Mavericks, senior guard Jerrell Lawrence (Baldwin, N.Y.) dropped in a career-high 21 points and was 3-for-6 from three-point land, while junior forward Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) scored 12 and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior guard Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y.) had 11 points, while Stitchell scored 10.

In all for the Pioneers, Tobin Carberry scored 28 points, while both Billy Butler and Tyuan Williams netted 15 each. Carberry posted 12 rebounds for the double-double, while Williams copied that with 11 rebounds.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host Dowling College in ECC play beginning at 2:30 p.m.
