DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2012) – Senior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the Mercy College women's basketball team with her 10th double-digit scoring game this season as the Mavericks hosted East Coast Conference rival Dowling College, which received votes and just missed out on a top-25 ranking in the most recent NCAA poll, early Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks stuck close in the opening minutes but the Golden Lions began to pull away at the 16-minute mark as they rode a 16-2 run that included a seven-minute scoreless stretch for Mercy.   Another 20-4 run to end the first half gave Dowling a commanding 30-point lead at the break.  The Golden Lions also scored the first 13 points of the second half as they held the Mavericks scoreless for another seven minutes.  Mercy rallied a bit down the stretch but the Golden Lions were never really threatened, eventually winning 72-32 despite Mercy posting its best three-point percentage of the season (40.0).

Dowling improved to 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the ECC while Mercy dropped to 0-14 (0-7).

Williams led the Mavericks with nine points and two assists while senior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) paced the team in blocks (two) and steals (five).

ECC Player of the Year candidate senior forward Danielle Wilson (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored 17 points in just 18 minutes but was severely limited on the boards, grabbing a meager three rebounds, well short of her 10.7 per-game average this season.  She did manage five blocks and two steals, as did three other Golden Lions, including assists leader senior guard Connie Simmons (Syosset, N.Y.), who dished out five dimes in just 15 minutes.  Junior forward Cache' Gamble (Newport News, Va.) led the squad with eight rebounds.

Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will take a short break from conference play as they head to Post University (8-9) on Monday, Jan. 21 for a 5:30 p.m. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day tipoff.
