Pope Scores 17 as Men's Basketball Battles Queens in ECC Play
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2013) - On Saturday afternoon, Mercy College senior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio) netted 17 points, as the Mavericks slipped up at the hands of Queens College, 90-73 at the Mercy Gymnasium. With the win, the Knights improved to 5-12 overall and 5-4 in the East Coast Conference, while Mercy dropped to 1-16 on the year (0-9 ECC).
The Mavericks stayed right on the Knights' heels for most of the opening half. With 6:44 remaining, Pope nailed a three-pointer to pull his club to within four (30-26). However, following that basket, Queens knocked out an 8-2 run to buy some more insurance as halftime approached. The Knights went into the intermission leading, 51-36.
Throughout the second stanza, Mercy battled, but wasn't able to get closer than 10 points of Queens' lead. The Knights finished the contest up, winning 90-73.
For the Mavericks, Pope finished with a team-high 17, while junior guard P.J. Walters (Hempstead, N.Y.) had 12 points and junior guard Remi Mignott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10. Graduate student Tracey Lewis (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior center Kendall Felix (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave Coach Parmenter valuable minutes off the bench. Lewis scored four points and dished out four assists, while Felix scored eight and grabbed three rebounds.
For the Knights, Patrick Parker poured in a game-best 32 points, while Deejuhan Gray had 14 off the bench. Also in double-digit scoring was Daniel Watson (12), Patrick Modzelewski (11) and George Holmes (10). Parker was an incredible 7-for-11 from behind the arc.
Head Coach Adam Parmenter and his squad return to action on Thursday evening when they host Roberts Wesleyan College beginning at 7:30 p.m. The last time these two ECC clubs met was on December 8 when the Redhawks narrowly-edged out the Mavericks in overtime, 84-79.
