Nardulli Pours in Career High 20 as Women's Basketball Hosts ECC Foe Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2013) – Junior guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 20 points as the Mercy College women's basketball team hosted East Coast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Thursday night.
Once again, Mercy dominated the turnover battle (12 to 22) but struggled to hit shots (30.8 percent) although the team hit a season-high nine three-pointers on a solid 37.5 shooting percentage.
The Mavericks fell into an 18-2 hole just five minutes into the game and just managed to cut the deficit back to single digits on nine unanswered points before the Redhawks recovered. Roberts Wesleyan extended its lead to 21 by halftime and led by no fewer than 14 points, eventually leaving with an 80-60 victory.
Roberts Wesleyan improved to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in ECC play while Mercy dropped to 0-18 (0-10).
Nardulli's 20 points came on 8-18 shooting from the field (4-11 beyond the arc), was just one point shy of the team's individual season high and led three Mavericks in double-digit scoring; senior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and freshman guard Danielle Losee (Merrick, N.Y.) netted 13 (3-4 on threes)and 10 points (2-6 on threes), respectively, with Losee's also marking a career high. Sophomore forward Shaniqua Lewis (Staten Island, N.Y.) pulled down 11 rebounds and made three steals while Losee dished out three assists and senior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) blocked a pair of shots.
Senior wing Marissa Bunce (Phelps, N.Y.) led the Redhawks with 20 points as well, hitting six of her eight three-point attempts, and sophomore guard Ashley Cianfriglia (Syracuse, N.Y.) netted 15 on 5-6 from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Marissa Sell (Brockport, N.Y.) recorded a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds while dishing out four assists, nabbing two steals and making two blocks. Senior wing Sarah Alwardt (Greece, N.Y.) also grabbed 10 rebounds and sophomore forward Carneisha Henry (Hilton, N.Y.) blocked five shots in just 21 minutes each.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will host the University of the District of Columbia (7-13, 2-8) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12:00 p.m.
