Mignott Paces Mercy in Scoring Against League-Rival NYIT
Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2013) - On Wednesday evening, the Mercy College men's basketball squad picked up East Coast Conference play in Old Westbury, N.Y. versus the New York Institute of Technology. The Bears defeated the Mavericks, 65-55, to improve their record to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the ECC. The Mavericks slipped to 1-11 on the year and 0-4 in the conference.
Mercy fought back from a game-opening 9-0 hole to take the lead at the 8:45 mark when junior forward Remi Mignott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted successfully from three-point land. Mercy grabbed a 20-18 advantage, the Mavericks' first of the contest.
More back-and-forth action saw the score get knotted up at 24-all with 4:16 left when Dominic Scurry dunked in two points for the Bears. Down 29-26 with 1:18 left, junior guard Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y.) drove in a lay-up for Mercy's final score of the first stanza. The Bears headed into halftime harboring a 31-28 lead.
With 13:28 remaining in the second period and the Mavericks behind, 39-36, Morrish nailed a jumper, which was followed by a three-pointer out of the hands of sophomore guard P.J. Walters (Hempstead, N.Y.). Mercy took a 41-39 lead.
Starting at 9:46 left, the Bears were able to knock off an 11-0 run to create distance between themselves and their guests. Scurry had five of those 11 points. NYIT closed out the game, winning 65-55.
For the Mavericks, Mignott finished with 16 points, while Walters added 11. Junior forward Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
For the Bears, Phil Izevbehai posted a contest-best 25 points, while Kayvon Roberts scored 12 points and had nine rebounds.
Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College beginning at 2:30 p.m.
