PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2013) – Junior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) posted a dominant double-double to lead the Mercy College volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday night.

Mercy improves to 6-6 overall while Chestnut Hill drops to 4-10 on the season.

The Mavericks went up early in the first set but were quickly overtaken as the Griffins put up six straight points to take a two-point lead at 12-10.  Mercy bounced right back, however, to regain the edge at 14-13.  Chestnut Hill managed to tie things back up on two more occasions, but the Mavericks pulled away for the 25-22 win.

Despite falling behind 4-1 to start the second set, Mercy stretched out to an 8-5 lead shortly after on a 7-1 run.  Soon after, the Griffins responded with a 9-1 run of their own to take a 17-13 lead.  A late Mercy rally knotted the set at 21-21 but ultimately came up short as Chestnut Hill held on for the 25-21 win to even the match at 1-1.

Mercy really came alive in the third set, exploding out to an 18-9 lead and cruising to the 25-15 victory to regain the match lead, 2-1.  The Mavericks hit a match-best .242 over the set, smashing 12 kills while committing just four errors.

Both teams came out raring to go in the fourth set, trading points all the way through as neither could separate themselves by more than three points early on and stayed within one from Chestnut Hill's 17-16 lead all the way to a Mercy lead at 23-22.  The Mavericks then capped things off with a 25-22 win to take the match, evening their record at .500 once again.

White led the Mavericks with 22 kills on an exceptional .429 hitting percentage and added 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.  Junior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) also added her first double-double of the season, making 34 assists and recording 10 digs.  Junior Sonia Morales (San Fernando, Calif. / Discovery Prep) added 10 kills and avoided even a single error in hitting .370 while seniors Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif. / Pasadena City College) and Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif. / Hartnell College) made 21 and 13 digs, respectively.

Freshman Madison McBride led the Griffins with 16 kills and matched that number in digs to record the double-double.  Freshman Emily Drew made 36 assists while senior Alexandra DePalma and freshman Regina Trabosh posted 19 and 15 digs, respectively.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks (6-6 overall, 0-2 conference) will attempt to build on the win as they return to East Coast Conference play at conference-leading LIU Post (11-3, 3-0) on Thursday, Oct. 1.
