Aboagye scored the game-winning goal to push the Mavericks, just ranked No. 5 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region Poll, to victory in double overtime over Caldwell College. The senior wing broke free to rip four shots over the course of the match, finally finding the back of the net on his last to record his second goal of the season.
Papas made six saves in net against Caldwell to record his eighth win of the season. The veteran also saved his second penalty kick in as many attempts this season, diving to his right to stop what would have been the equalizing goal in the 81st minute. He leads the ECC with a .833 save percentage on the year.
The Mavericks improved to 8-2-1 overall with the 2-1 double overtime win over Caldwell on Thursday Junior Andrew Levy (Bayside, N.Y, / Berkeley College) put Mercy ahead early on a through ball behind the defense from freshman Michael Ledesma (Miami Beach, Fla. / Miami Beach Senior). Aboagye's game-winner came just before the final whistle in the 107th minute after junior Roberto Dashi (Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) beat two defenders on the right end line and sent the ball across the open net to the winger for the victory.
The award is Papas' third honor of the season after earning Defensive Player of the Week recognition in Weeks One and Three, while it is Aboagye's first of the season.
Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will host Molloy College (4-6-2, 2-2-2) on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. The Mercy Student Government Association will be selling "Fill the Hill" t-shirts for $10 as part of their first home event in conjunction with the Mercy College Department of Athletics and Recreation, and the game will also be a celebration of the ECC's "Pink" Week initiative.
