DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2013) – Senior Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif. / Pasadena City College) led a trio of Mavericks to record double-digit dig totals as the Mercy College volleyball team battled East Coast Conference rival Queens College to a 3-1 loss on Tuesday night.

Mercy's record is now 8-12 overall and 1-8 in ECC play while Queens improves to 9-8 (3-6).

The Mavericks exploded out to an early 9-1 lead in the first set thanks to five attack errors by the Knights.  Queens looked to be on the way to recovering with a 6-1 run that cut the deficit to three, but Mercy ran off a 10-1 series to stretch out to a commanding 20-8 lead before closing out the set, 25-16.

The second set was tightly contested through to an 8-8 tie before the Mavericks rattled off four straight points to take the lead.  The Knights quickly recovered, however, and after an 18-18 tie would not give up the lead, going on to win 25-21 and even the match.

Queens rode the momentum into the third set to the tune of an early 7-1 lead from which Mercy could not recover, eventually falling 25-8 as the Knights scored the final seven points of the set to take the 2-1 match lead.

The Knights held a slight edge early in the fourth set and led 12-11 before finally separating from the Mavericks and taking the set, 25-20, as well as the match.

Junior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) led the Mavericks with 14 kills on a .216 hitting percentage while junior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) made 38 assists.  Hopkins, freshman Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas) and senior Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif. / Hartnell College) recorded 18, 11 and 10 digs, respectively, with White and Ronan just missing double-doubles with nine digs apiece.

Junior MacKenzie Hamilton led the Knights with 10 kills while senior Ceren Kilic made 36 assists and sophomore Xhesi Domi recorded 17 digs.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will continue ECC play at Molloy College (9-12, 3-5) on Thursday, Oct. 24.  The game will be available online via Live Stats and video broadcast, which can be accessed through the volleyball schedule page.
