Hopkins Records 10th Double Digit Dig Game as Volleyball Faces ECC Leader LIU Post
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2013) – Senior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif. / Pasadena City College) recorded her 10th double-digit dig game of the season and junior Sonia Morales (San Fernando, Calif. / Discovery Prep) surpassed 50 blocks on the season as the Mercy College volleyball team faced East Coast Conference-leading LIU Post, falling 3-0.
Mercy's record is now 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the ECC, while LIU Post improvers to 12-3 (4-0).
The Pioneers exploded to an early 11-3 lead on their home court to start the first set and held steady for the 25-15 victory. Another early start saw LIU Post lead 7-0 and 14-3 before a late Mavericks rally cut the deficit back to eight in the end at 25-17.
The Mavericks were not about to bow out, however, and stayed even with the Pioneers early in the third set. Unfortunately for Mercy, LIU Post notched 11 straight points to put the match out of reach, finally ending the set with a 25-11 victory.
Hopkins recorded a match-high 15 digs while Morales' two block assists put her over the 50-block mark for the season with 51 total (six solo). Junior outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) led the squad with seven kills while junior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) managed 17 assists.
Senior Makamae Namahoe posted her fifth double-double of the year with a 12-kill, 11-dig effort while hitting .400 on the night for the Pioneers. Junior Lulu Centro made 26 assists while sophomore Rachel Ringor recorded 13 digs.
