Hopkins Leads Volleyball Against ECC Rival LIU Post

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2013) – Senior Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) led the Mavericks with 15 digs as the Mercy College volleyball team hosted LIU Post in an East Coast Conference matchup on Thursday night, falling 3-0.

The Mavericks are now 9-14 overall and 2-9 in the ECC while the Pioneers improve to 20-6 (9-3).

Mercy stayed right with LIU Post early in the first set, even getting out to a 7-5 lead before the Pioneers turned things up with a 15-2 run to take a 20-9 lead, which they held through to a 25-14 victory.

LIU Post jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second set and stretched it out to 20-9 before closing out the set, 25-13.  The Mavericks fell behind again early in the third set, 10-5, but fought back to trail only 18-15 before the Pioneers finished things off, 25-19, to take the match.

Junior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) led the Mavericks with nine kills while junior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) made 14 assists.

Freshman Shelby McCool led the Pioneers with 10 kills on a .316 hitting percentage while junior Lulu Centro made 21 assists and sophomore Rachel Ringor recorded 10 digs.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will head to Long Island for a tri-match with ECC foe NYIT (21-4, 9-3) and Merrimack College (10-12) on Saturday, Nov. 2.
