Volleyball Closes Out Away Schedule at ECC Foe Roberts Wesleyan, Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2013) – Junior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) led the Mercy College volleyball team with her 12th double-double of the season to cap off this year's slate of away matches as the Mavericks fell to East Coast Conference opponents Roberts Wesleyan College, 3-1, and Daemen College, 3-0, this weekend.

Mercy's record now stands at 11-18 overall and 2-12 in the ECC, while RWC improves to 8-14 (3-11) and Daemen moves to 21-9 (8-5).

Roberts Wesleyan 3, Mercy 1

The Redhawks jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the first set and held it until a 7-2 Mercy run gave the Mavericks a one-point lead at 18-17.  RWC regained the edge with three straight points and was soon serving with set point at 24-22, but Mercy rallied to score the final four points and take the first set, 26-24.

RWC again took the early lead, 7-2, in Set Two, and once more Mercy tied things up at 17-17 on a 7-1 run.  The Redhawks responded with another three consecutive points and this time finished the job, evening the match with a 25-20 victory.

The third set started exactly the same as the previous two, but RWC surged ahead midway through with 11 unanswered points to lead by 13 at 19-6 and closed it out, 25-12.  The fourth set was more closely contested, but RWC scored eight of the final 10 points to win, 25-17, and clinch the match.

White led the Mavericks with 16 kills while senior Nicolette Gebhardt (Bloomingburg, N.Y. / Pine Bush) smacked 11.  Junior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) made 34 assists and senior Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif. / Pasadena City College) recorded her 13th 20-dig effort with 21.

Daemen 3, Mercy 0

The Mavericks started out with a 9-5 lead over the Wildcats the next morning, but Daemen took control with an 8-2 run and rattled off another 8-1 run before locking up the first set, 25-20.

The second set was tightly contested all the way through as neither team led by more than three points.  The Wildcats would pull out the 25-22 victory, though, and took control early in the third set to cruise to a 25-17 win.

White again led Mercy with 11 kills and completed the double-double with 12 digs while Gebhardt smacked nine on a .318 hitting percentage.  Ronan made 20 assists and Hopkins recorded her 10th straight match with double-digit digs, making 15.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will gear up for their season-ending home stand as they host Dowling College (18-11, 9-5) on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. and the University of Bridgeport (16-2, 12-1) on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
