Men's Basketball Battles ECC-Rival NYIT

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2013) - On Monday evening, the Mercy College men's basketball team hosted the New York Institute of Technology at the Mercy Gymnasium in a postponed contest due to the recent blizzard. The Bears defeated the Mavericks, 84-64. With the win, the Bears improved to 15-8 (9-4 East Coast Conference). Following the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 3-18 (2-11 ECC).

Mercy played terrific in the opening half as the Mavericks went on to outscore their opponents 35-29 by halftime.

Seven minutes into the second period, Mercy was trailing 49-45 after NYIT reeled off a 7-2 run to grab the lead. The hosts hung tough with the Bears, but over the next couple of minutes foul trouble plagued the Mavericks, forcing some key contributers to the bench. The Bears saw their opportunity to build a strong lead and went on to secure the 84-64 triumph.

For the Mavericks, junior guard Chaz Morrish (Douglaston, N.Y.) finished with 11 points, while junior forward Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) added 10 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio) netted nine.

In all for the Bears, Phil Izevbehai scored a game-high 18 points, while Dominic Scurry and Kayvon Roberts each poured in 17. Azel Prather Jr. netted 14.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and his team return to action on Wednesday night when play at St. Thomas Aquinas College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Sparkill, N.Y.
