SPARKILL, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2013) - On Wednesday evening, the Mercy College men's basketball team headed to Rockland County to keep itself in the East Coast Conference playoff picture battling St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Mavericks did just that, earning another league win of the year with a 68-63 triumph over the Spartans. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 4-18 (3-11 ECC). Following the defeat, the Spartans fell to 5-18 (5-9 ECC).

With five minutes gone by in the opening stanza, the Spartans jumped out to a 17-6 advantage. The Mavericks were then, over the next three minutes, able to rip off an 11-2 run to come within two points of the lead.

For the remainder of the first period, Mercy held three different leads. The game was a back-and-forth, very evenly-matched contest between the Mavericks and their hosts.

With 15:31 left in the second half, junior forward Remi Mignott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted successfully on a pair of three throws -- the first tying the game, while the second gave Mercy a 40-39 lead. From that point on, the Mavericks never relinquished that lead as they grabbed their third conference win of the season.

For the Mavericks, senior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio) finished with 14 points, while Mignott had 12. Junior forward Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) netted 10 points. The trio combined for a stellar 23 rebounds. Rookie guard Nate Stitchell (Coventry, R.I.) dished out four assists and scored nine points.

For the Spartans, Justin Brown and T.J. Jones tied for the game-high with 16 points each, while Nick Lopez had 10.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they host ECC-foe LIU Post. Tip-off is slated for 2:30 p.m.
