Moore Leads Women's Basketball in Holding ECC Rival No. 15 Dowling to Near Season Low

(Feb. 23, 2013) – Senior forward MarQuesha Moore (Bryans Road, Md.) led the Mercy College women's basketball team in its penultimate game of the season as the Mavericks held East Coast Conference rival No. 15 Dowling College to a near-season low 49 points on Saturday afternoon.
Mercy limited Dowling to an uncharacteristic 38.8 percent shooting from the floor, including a 17.6 percent mark from beyond the arc.
The Golden Lions got things started with an 8-0 run over the opening five minutes before junior guard Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) put the Mavericks on the board with a three-pointer. Mercy kept within 10 points for the next seven minutes, coming as close as six, before Dowling scored the final eight points of the half over eight minutes to lead, 25-11, at the break.
Dowling tacked on another seven points to open the second half and led by as much as 28 before Mercy recovered. Down 25 with about six minutes to play, the Mavericks rallied to score 12 unanswered points, but with only 2:41 remaining in the game, it was not to be. Dowling hit one final three-pointer and held out for the 49-33 victory.
Dowling improves to 21-3 overall and 15-1 in ECC play, while Mercy falls to 0-25 (0-17).
Moore led the Mavericks with 11 points, tying with senior guard Aysha Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) for the high in rebounds (five) and steals (three). Williams also had nine points while sophomore forward Shaniqua Lewis (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded two assists.
Senior forward and ECC Player of the Year contender Danielle Wilson (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led the Golden Lions as the only double-digit scorer with 12 points in 20 minutes of court time, while senior guard Connie Simmons (Syosset, N.Y.) grabbed nine rebounds and dished out six assists over 19 minutes.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will travel to ECC foe the University of the District of Columbia (9-18, 4-13) for the season finale on Saturday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m.
