Men's Basketball Squares Off Against Bridgeport For Second Time This Season

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 6, 2013) - On Wednesday evening, the Mercy College men's basketball team headed to East Coast Conference-foe the University of Bridgeport for a 7:00 p.m. showdown. The Purple Knights snapped the Mavericks' winning streak with a 79-51 victory in the Hubbell Gymnasium. With the win, the Purple Knights improved to 15-8 (11-2), while the Mavericks fell to 3-17 (2-10 ECC).

The Mavericks weren't able to find a rhythm throughout the opening half, where Bridgeport outscored its opponent, 31-18.

Following halftime, the tune of the game was the same with the Purple Knights never relinquishing their advantage. However, Mercy did score 33 points in the second half, but the hosts put up 48 to make sure they had the ECC victory secured.

For the Mavericks, senior forward Joseph Pope (Akron, Ohio) scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while junior forward Kirk Bailey (Freeport, N.Y.) had nine points. Junior guard P.J. Walters (Hempstead, N.Y.) handed out four assists.

For the Purple Knights, Darian David netted a game-high 17 points, while Jojo Swift had 16 off the bench. Ivan Simic added 11.

Head Coach Adam Parmenter and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they host NYIT in ECC play. Tip-off is slated for 2:30 p.m.
