Baseball Hosts Pace in 2013 Season Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2013) - On Friday afternoon, the Mercy College baseball team kicked off its 2013 campaign against Pace University at Mavericks Field. The Setters, with help from the long ball, downed the Mavericks, 6-0. With the win, Pace improved to 1-3, while the Mavericks fell to 0-1.

Mercy freshman pitcher James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y.), who was the New York State High School Class A Pitcher of the Year last year, hurled five innings of one-run ball. He surrendered six hits, one of them a home run to designated hitter James Pjura in the second frame.

The Setters tacked on insurance runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings against Mavericks rookie Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn.). Chris Gili smacked a three-run homer against Hock in the top of the ninth.

Pace starter Neil Pezzullo went eight innings, giving up two hits and whiffing three. He improved to 1-1 on the year.

Sophomore Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y.) and junior Ken Post (Closter, N.J.) recorded singles for Mercy, while junior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) crushed a double.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow when they travel to Garden City, Long Island to square off against Adelphi University at 1:00 p.m.
