Baseball Returns From Florida; Opens ECC Play This Afternoon
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2013) - The Mercy College baseball squad returned home from a week-and-a-half trip down in Florida, and will begin a four-game series versus East Coast Conference-foe Molloy College today at 3:30 p.m.
The Mavericks were 0-1-1 when they arrived in the Sunshine State on March 8. The next day, Mercy began its Florida action by splitting a twinbill with Southern Connecticut State (L, 4-0 / W, 8-7). The Mavericks then dropped the next three games (two against UMass-Lowell, and one versus Merrimack), before taking the second game of the Merrimack doubleheader, 6-3. At that point, Mercy had a 2-5-1 record.
Mercy struggled in its next five games, before grabbing a 3-1 victory over the University of New Haven. The Mavericks closed out its Florida trip with a 7-4 loss to New Haven on March 19, to come home with a 3-11-1 ledger.
On the season, sophomore Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and junior Jeremy Lovera (Carmel, N.Y.) both lead the squad with a .350 batting average, while rookie Steve Longo (Bayport, N.Y.) is making a quick impact in his collegiate debut year, by batting .294. Sophomore Anthony McQuade (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) is leading the team in doubles (4), while Salvo has a team-high eight RBI. Lovera and Longo have driven in seven and six runs, respectively. Junior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) ranks first on the Mavericks with a .439 on-base percentage, while Lovera is slugging .450.
On the hill, junior reliever Adam Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) hasn't surrendered a run in his 4.2 innings of work, while senior Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa.), fresh off being named to the ECC Player of the Week Honor Roll, owns a 1.50 ERA in two starts (1-0). Cummings' 10 strikeouts lead the staff.
Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action this afternoon when they open up ECC play with a 3:30 p.m. showdown with Molloy College. The game will be played at Hofstra University.
