BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2013) - The Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader with Post University in Waterbury, Conn. on Friday afternoon. The Mavericks won the first game, 9-5, and fell in the second, 6-4. The Mavericks then traveled to Long Island on Saturday and took on LIU Post to open up East Coast Conference action. The Pioneers took both games, 12-4 and 7-2.

Game 1: Mercy 9, Post University 5

The Mavericks scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, but sealed the win wtih a five-run eighth frame. Sophomore right fielder Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y.) finished with three RBI as she went 2-for-5, while sophomore second baseman Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.) notched three hits in five at-bats.

In the circle, junior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) hurled all eight innings, surrendering five runs (four earned), while whiffing five batters.

Game 2: Post University 6, Mercy 4

In the second contest on Friday versus Post University, Mercy scored twice in each of the first two innings. However, the Mavericks weren't able to overcome a five-run second inning from their opponents. Sophomore catcher Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.) went 1-for-3 and had two RBI, while Forbes finished 2-for-3.

On the pitching front, junior starter Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) struggled, giving up six runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) came in for 2.1 frames of shutout relief.

Game 1: LIU Post 12, Mercy 4

The Pioneers excelled from the get-go in this game as they plated nine runs over the opening three frames. Sieber, who started the game, struggled, as did junior Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) out of the bullpen. In the batter's box, junior first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Game 2: LIU Post 7, Mercy 2

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, LIU Post exploded for six runs. Mercy scored its final run in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late, unfortunately, as the Pioneers won, 7-2.

Serrao started this game and went 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs to score, although only one was earned. Simpson and Johnson combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks (7-8, 0-2 ECC) return to action tomorrow (Sun.) when they square off against Caldwell College in New Jersey. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
