Baseball Hosts League-Foe Molloy In Slugfest

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2013) - At Mavericks Field Saturday afternoon, the Mercy College baseball team hosted East Coast Conference-foe Molloy College in a slugfest, ultimately falling, 9-6 to the Lions. With the win, Molloy improved to 8-14 (2-0 ECC). Following the defeat, the Mavericks slipped to 3-13-1 (0-2 ECC).

In the top of the fourth, the Lions held a 1-0 advantage. Molloy then plated eight runs over the next four frames. Mercy grabbed three of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth. In that sixth, junior third baseman Ken Post (Closter, N.J.) had an RBI single, while junior first baseman Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) notched a two-run single.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, freshman shortstop Steve Longo (Bayport, N.Y.) smacked a solo home run to centerfield to cut Mercy's deficit to 9-4.

The Mavericks scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had a bases-loaded threat going before Molloy was able to lock down the 9-6 win.

In all for the Mavericks, Jaile and Longo both went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while junior Michael Dern (Roslyn, N.Y.) had two hits in four at-bats. On the mound, freshman starter James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y.) went the first five innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits.

For the Lions, Carlos Guzman finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Erik Pyle was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Kris Kelly went 3-for-4. On the hill, Alex Miden earned the win with six innings of three-run ball. Patrick Brown recorded his second save of the year.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks close out their four-game series with Molloy tomorrow when they play a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. The games will be played at Hofstra University on Long Island.
