Softball Battles Caldwell College in Sunday Doubleheader

CALDWELL, N.J. (Mar. 24, 2013) - On Sunday, the Mercy College softball team ventured to New Jersey to take on Caldwell College in twinbill action. The Mavericks dropped both games by scores of 3-0 and 7-0. With the victories, the Cougars bettered their record to 9-4, while the Mavericks slipped to 7-10 overall.

Game 1: Caldwell 3, Mercy 0

Although the Mavericks outhit the Cougars in the first game, 7-5, they weren't able to plate any runs and fell, 3-0. Junior pitcher Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) hurled six innings and gave up three runs, but only one was earned. She struck out three.

In the batter's box, junior Briana Panarese (Monroe, N.Y.) went 2-for-3.

Game 2: Caldwell 7, Mercy 0

In the second contest of the day, Mercy was held to just two hits by Caldwell pitching. One of those hits was a double off the bat of freshman Taylor Concklin (Montgomery, N.Y.).

In the circle, junior Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) was strapped with the loss, pitching in relief. She threw 2.1 innings and surrendered four runs, although only one was earned. Following her, sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Next up for Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will be St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m.
