Baseball Plays Heartbreaker Against Queens College
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 28, 2013) - On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College baseball squad hosted East Coast Conference-opponent Queens College in an absolute thriller at Mavericks Field. The Knights scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to grab a 4-3 lead. Although the Mavericks loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame, they weren't able to plate the tying run.
With the win, Queens improved to 4-12 (3-2 ECC), while the Mavericks slipped to 3-16-1 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior Nick Papas (Castleton, N.Y.) blasted a triple to deep centerfield that scored junior Ken Post (Closter, N.J.) from first base. One batter later, sophomore DH Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly to bring home junior Brendan Siegriest (Nanuet, N.Y.), who pinch-ran for Papas.
Ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Mavericks grabbed an insurance run when junior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) scored on an error.
In the top of the ninth, with one out and Mercy leading 3-1, the Knights scored on a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double. Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Queens held a 4-3 advantage.
After terrific plate discipline and three straight walks to load the bases, Queens starting pitcher Joe Salanitri closed the door on the Mavericks for the win.
In all, senior starter Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa.) threw a tremendous game for the Mavericks. He hurled 8.1 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. Cummings whiffed seven.
For Queens, Salanitri pitched nine innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out five.
Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they square off against Queens for an ECC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
