Softball Sweeps NYIT in ECC Twinbill

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2013) - The Mercy College softball team ventured to Long Island to battle East Coast Conference-opponent NYIT in a twinbill. The Mavericks swept by final scores of 3-1 and 6-3. With the victories, Mercy improved to 11-10 overall and 4-2 in the ECC, while the Bears fell to 5-13 and 0-4.

Game 1: Mercy 3, NYIT 1

In the top of the third, freshman Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly, driving in junior Briana Panarese (Monroe, N.Y.) tying the game at 1-1.

Breaking open the tie in the top of the sixth frame, Mercy freshman Taylor Concklin (Montgomery, N.Y.) crushed a two-run double to centerfield. Junior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) and sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) scored.

The Mavericks banged out 11 hits in the opening game. In the circle, junior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) evened her record at 5-5 by hurling seven innings of one-run ball. She struck out three and walked two.

Game 2: Mercy 6, NYIT 3

In the top of the second, a pair of RBI singles from sophomore Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and junior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

One frame later, Bentson and senior Courtney Butler (Islip, N.Y.) recorded RBI singles to make it 4-0.

Bentson walked with the bases loaded in the fourth to give the Mavericks a 5-0 advantage.

The Bears started a comeback attempt, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Mercy eventually held on to the 6-3 win.

Bentson finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Gardiner was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Mercy had 12 hits in this game.

Serrao earned her fourth win of the year, pitching six scoreless innings, while striking out four.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and his team return to action on Tuesday when the Mavericks host Bridgeport starting at 3:00 p.m.
