FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2013) - On Saturday, the Mercy College baseball squad headed to Flushing, N.Y. to take on East Coast Conference-foe Queens College. The Knights swept the twinbill from the Mavericks by scores of 5-1 and 4-0. With the wins, Queens improved to 6-12 overall and 5-2 in the ECC, while the Mavericks fell to 3-18-1 and 0-7 in the league.

Game 1: Queens 5, Mercy 1

With the game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Queens plated four runs to grab a 5-1 lead. Three RBI singles would be the undoing for the Mavericks.

For Mercy, sophomore Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y.) went 2-for-2, while rookie Steve Longo (Bayport, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 a run scored. Junior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) had the team's lone RBI.

On the mound, freshman James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y.) struggled, giving up five runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. Fellow freshman Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn.) came out of the bullpen and hurled 1.2 shutout innings.

For Queens, Nick LoBello was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while Danny Muller was 2-for-4 with a run scored. John Dondero pitched all seven innings (5 H, 1 R, 4 K).

Game 2: Queens 4, Mercy 0

The Knights jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third, when Muller doubled in a run and Warren Kelly had a bases-loaded walk. A couple of more runs in subsequent innings made it 4-0 in favor of Queens.

Mercy junior Jeremy Lovera (Carmel, N.Y.) finished 2-for-3, while Palumbo had the team's lone extra-base hit, a double.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to the diamond on Monday when they host Queens in the series finale. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
