(Mar. 9, 2013) - On Saturday morning, the Mercy College softball team opened up its 2013 season down in Clermont, Fla. at The National Training Center in a twinbill versus Wilmington (Del.) University. In the first contest, Wilmington defeated Mercy, 4-0. In the second game, the Mavericks won, 6-5.
With today's games, the Mavericks moved to 1-1 on the year, while the Wildcats, who have been playing for quite some time, see their record change to 9-11.
Game One: Wilmington 4, Mercy 0
The Wildcats scored two runs in each of the first two innings and that would end up being the only offense of the entire contest.
Mercy junior hurler Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) went just 1.2 innings and surrendered all four runs (three earned) on four hits. She walked four. In relief, sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) was the stopper, pitching the rest of the game and giving up only two hits.
Chelsea Botsch went four innings for Wilmington, while Jillian Stafford earned the save after completing three scoreless frames. Shortstop Christin Headley had two RBI and a double.
Game Two: Mercy 6, Wilmington 5
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the Mavericks came back to plate three of their own. After a Wildcats' fielding error allowed Mercy's first run to come across home plate, senior Lexi Majury (Bayville, N.J.) notched a two-run single.
Playing from behind again in the bottom of the seventh frame (Wilmington led 5-3), the Mavericks put together an impressive comeback. After a single to lead off the inning, Mercy then saw an RBI triple off the bat of freshman Taylor Concklin (Montgomery, N.Y.). Majury added an RBI single immediately after to tie the game at 5-5. Then with one out in the frame, sophomore Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y.) singled up the middle bringing home senior Natalie Wabshinak (New Fairfield, Conn.) to give Mercy the 6-5 triumph.
In the circle, junior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) pitched 4.1 innings and surrendered four runs, while newcomer and junior transfer Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) hurled the remaining 2.2 frames, giving up one run on three hits. In the batter's box, Majury led the game with three RBI, while Concklin had two runs batted in.
