Softball Crushes St. Thomas Aquinas 15-0 in First Game of DH; Wins Game 2, 4-2

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2013) - On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team played East Coast Conference-rival St. Thomas Aquinas College in doubleheader action. The Mavericks pounded the Spartans, 15-0 in Game 1, and completed the sweep in Game 2, by a final score of 4-2.
Game 1: Mercy 15, St. Thomas Aquinas 0
In the top of the first frame, junior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) crushed a three-run homer. Sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) then went back-to-back when she deposited the ball over the fence for a solo shot.
The Mavericks had an enormous third inning as they scored 10 runs.
At the dish, Bentson finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while freshman Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and four runs batted in. Every hitter in the original line-up had at least one hit.
Junior starting pitcher Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) was equally as impressive as the Mercy hitters. She hurled a complete-game, three-hit shutout, while striking out seven. Her record on the year improved to 7-3.
Game 2: Mercy 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 2
Down 2-0 in the fifth inning, Mercy scored a run on a STAC fielding error to cut their deficit in half. One frame later, the Mavericks plated three runs to take a 4-3 advantage. Johnson smacked an RBI double, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The third run was scored when sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the field on Saturday when they host NYIT beginning at 1:00 p.m.
