Men's Lacrosse Ventures to Philadelphia to Battle Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2013) - On Saturday, the Mercy College men's lacrosse squad fell to Chestnut Hill College, 12-8 in Philadelphia, Pa.  With the victory, the Griffins improved to 5-5 and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference. Following the defeat, the Mavericks slipped to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Down 5-3 with one minute gone by in the third quarter, the Mavericks rattled off three unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead. Mercy retook the lead at 7-6 with 45 seconds left in that period, but the Griffins found the back of the netting to even the score.

The fourth quarter was started with 12 minutes of Chestnut Hill goals. The Griffins scored five times to take a 12-7 lead. A Mercy goal by sophomore Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) made it 12-8, but it was scored with 57 seconds remaining in regulation.

For the Mavericks, senior John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, N.Y.) finished with three goals and one assist, while Wood had three goals and two assists. Seniors Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.) and Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) added a goal apiece. In the cage, rookie goalkeeper A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y.) made five saves.

In all for Chestnut Hill, Michael Landau, Michael Melnychenko and Dennis Klusaritz Jr. all scored hat tricks. Between the pipes, Dakota Maurer stopped 17 shots.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Apr. 20 when they host Roberts Wesleyan College at 12:00 p.m.
