Softball Splits Doubleheader with NYIT

Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2013) - On Saturday, the Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader against the New York Institute of Technology. In Game 1, the Bears won, 5-2, while the Mavericks came back late to grab a 9-5 victory in the second contest. With the action, the Mavericks' record is now at 18-15 overall and 9-7 in the East Coast Conference.
Game 1: NYIT 5, Mercy 2
NYIT scored in the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead against Mercy junior starter Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). The Mavericks cut their deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded an RBI double.
The Bears picked up a couple of insurance runs and locked down the 5-2 triumph.
Sieber pitched the whole game, surrendering five runs, although only one was earned.
Game 2: Mercy 9, NYIT 5
Down 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Mercy exploded for six runs in the inning to take the lead. That wild fifth inning had Mercy scoring on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly, a fielding error, an RBI double, an RBI single and a steal of home.
Mercy junior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) piled it on in the next frame with a two-run homer.
Junior reliever Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) earned the win as she pitched 2.2 shutout innings. Her record improved to 3-1.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action on Tuesday when they host LIU Post at 3:00 p.m.
