DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2013) - On Tuesday, the Mercy College softball team hosted East Coast Conference-foe LIU Post in doubleheader action. In Game 1, the Pioneers won, 5-2, while also taking Game 2 in five frames, 9-0. With the wins, the Pioneers improved to 31-10 and 16-2 in the ECC. Following the defeats, the Mavericks slipped to 18-17 and 9-9 in the league.

Game 1: LIU Post 5, Mercy 2

With the contest scoreless in the bottom of the third, Mercy sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) put her team up 1-0 when she knocked an RBI single into right centerfield, bringing home fellow sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.).

The next inning, LIU Post took its first lead of the day when the Pioneers scored twice. A two-run homer from Pioneers' shortstop Nicole Hagenah gave her team a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth frame.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Johnson recorded another RBI single, once again, plating Forbes. However, that would be the final, 5-2 in favor of the Pioneers.

Game 2: LIU Post 9, Mercy 0 (5 innings)

Mercy junior pitcher Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) got the nod to start Game 2 of the doubleheader and struggled against the Pioneers' batters. She surrendered nine runs on 13 hits in four innings pitched. She saw her record drop to 3-2 on the season.

Johnson came in from the bullpen and hurled a shutout inning of relief.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bridgeport, Conn. for a doubleheader with ECC-rival the University of Bridgeport. Prior to that twinbill, the two squads will resume the game that was suspended due to darkness on April 2. The game will pick up in the top of the sixth inning, with the score knotted at 5-5.
