Baseball Battles Bridgeport in League Twinbill

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2013) - On Friday, the Mercy College baseball team battled East Coast Conference-opponent the University of Bridgeport in doubleheader action. In Game 1, Mercy fell, 7-0, while the Purple Knights downed the Mavericks in the second contest, 6-2. With the wins, Bridgeport improved to 14-6 and 8-6 in the ECC, while the Mavericks slipped to 6-29-1 and 3-15 in the league.

Game 1: Bridgeport 7, Mercy 0

The Purple Knights were in control of this game from the get-go and scored in the first inning. They then plated some insurance runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and six innings. Mercy senior starter Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa.) gave up six runs (five earned) in six innings of work.

Bridgeport hurler Shaun Hancock improved to 3-2 on the year, following a five-hit, eight-inning shutout performance.

Game 2: Bridgeport 6, Mercy 2

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Mercy scored twice. Sophomore Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had an RBI single, while sophomore Anthony McQuade (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) hooked an RBI double down the left field line.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action on Sunday when they play a doubleheader at Bridgeport beginning at 3:00 p.m.
