Softball Spars With Molloy and Chestnut Hill

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - This week, the Mercy College softball team squared off against Molloy College in East Coast Conference action. The Mavericks fell to the Lions in both games of the doubleheader, 10-3 and 8-0 (six innings) on Tuesday. Then, on Thursday, the Mavericks swept a twinbill from Chestnut Hill College, 11-4 and 4-0.

With the week's action, the Mavericks' record currently stands at 23-21, while their ECC record is 10-13.

In Game 1 of the doubleheader versus Molloy, junior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) and sophomores Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) drove in a run each. In the circle, Johnson and junior Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) combined for 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

In Game 2, the Mavericks were no-hit by Molloy pitcher Megan Butterworth in six innings.

Against the Griffins of Chestnut Hill, the Mavericks belted out 17 hits in Game 1 alone. Bentson finished 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Chrissie Cleary (Smithtown, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.) drove in five runs.

In the circle, junior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) earned the win, bettering her record to 10-5.

In Game 2 versus the Griffins, junior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) fired four shutout innings, giving up just four hits. Junior Kimberly Crnkovich (La Selva Beach, Calif.) drove in three runs via a double.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they host Dowling College. Mercy's three graduating seniors -- Courtney Butler, Natalie Wabshinak and Ashley Johnstone -- will be honored before first pitch. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
