Softball Sweeps Queens to Claim ECC Postseason Tournament Berth!

Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2013) - On Sunday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team won both games of a doubleheader versus Queens College to claim the fourth seed in the East Coast Conference Postseason Tournament. The Mavericks will square off against top-seeded LIU Post on Thursday at LIU Post.
With the two victories, Mercy's overall record improved to 26-23, while their ECC slate moved to 13-15. After Queens won the April 4 suspended game earlier today, 8-7 in 10 innings, the Mavericks had to win both games of the doubleheader to finish one game above Queens in the standings. And Mercy did just that.
Game 1: Mercy 3, Queens 2
The Mavericks scored two in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.) notched an RBI single in the frame. After Queens grabbed a run back in the bottom of the first, Mercy scored its insurance run in the second frame off an RBI single from junior Briana Panarese (Monroe, N.Y.).
Mercy junior starter Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) was brilliant as she hurled seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned), while striking out five.
Game 2: Mercy 7, Queens 2
Tied 1-1 in the top of the third, junior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) and sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) smacked back-to-back doubles to drive in three runs.
Mercy scored insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the final frame, senior Courtney Butler (Islip, N.Y.) doubled in a run, while freshman Taylor Concklin (Montgomery, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch.
Extremely similiar to Serrao's pitching line in Game 1, junior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) threw seven innings in Game 2, surrendering two runs (one earned), while striking out five.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will faceoff against top-seeded LIU Post (44-11, 25-3 ECC) on Thursday at LIU Post in the ECC Postseason Tournament, which features a double-elimination style of play.
