Softball Splits Doubleheader With ECC-Foe Dowling

Box Score 2 BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2013) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Mercy College softball squad split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with Dowling College. Mercy took Game 1, 8-3, while the Golden Lions were victorious in Game 2, 2-1. With the day's action, the Mavericks' record changed to 15-14 overall and 6-6 in the league, while Dowling moved to 19-9 and 8-6 in the ECC.
Game 1: Mercy 8, Dowling 3
Junior Kimberly Crnkovich (La Selva Beach, Calif.) had an RBI single in the top of the first to give Mercy a quick 1-0 lead. Dowling came back in the bottom of the third to plate three runs to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Mavericks broke open the game with seven runs in the fifth frame. The big knock of the inning was junior Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) bringing home two runs with a double.
In the circle, junior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) pitched the whole game, giving up three runs and whiffing three batters. Her record improved to 6-3 on the season. Bentson, Crnkovich and freshman Taylor Concklin (Montgomery, N.Y.) all drove in two runs each.
Game 2: Dowling 2, Mercy 1
The Mavericks went up 1-0 in the top of the second inning when Bentson doubled home sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.).
One inning later, the Golden Lions were able to tie the game at 1-1. Dowling had an RBI triple in the fourth frame to take a 2-1 lead, which would end up being the final.
Junior pitcher Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was strapped with the loss, although she performed better than that. She hurled six innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action on Thursday when they play St. Thomas Aquinas College in doubleheader action at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played on Mercy's campus, although the Spartans will be the home team in both games.
