Softball Squares Off Against LIU Post in First Day of ECC Playoffs

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 2, 2013) - On Thursday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team returned to the East Coast Conference playoffs, following its last appearance in 2011. On the first day of action at LIU Post's softball complex, the fourth-seeded Mavericks fell to top-seeded LIU Post, 10-2. With the loss, Mercy will now play in the second game tomorrow versus Dowling. Game time for tomorrow is set for 12:30 p.m. at LIU Post.

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 45-11 on the year, while the Mavericks fell to 26-24 overall.

LIU Post plated three runs in the bottom of the first off a homer by Aly Dzierzynski. The Pioneers added one more in the second inning before Mercy jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the third frame. Sophomore Shelby Johnson (Bullhead City, Ariz.) singled up the middle to score fellow sophomore Shannon Forbes (Nesconset, N.Y.).

The Mavericks scored another run in the fourth when sophomore Jessica Doria (Franklin Square, N.Y.) blasted one over the right centerfield wall to cut her team's deficit to 4-2.

The Pioneers had a four-run fifth and a one-run sixth to take a 10-2 advantage, which concluded the game.

For Mercy, junior Brittany Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) hurled three innings and surrendered four runs, while junior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) gave up five runs in two frames.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow (Friday) when they square off against Dowling at 12:30 p.m. at LIU Post's softball complex. Live stats and a live audio broadcast can be found via the team's schedule page on MercyAthletics.com.
