Softball Closes Out 2013 Season Against Dowling in Round 2 of ECC Playoffs

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 3, 2013) - On Friday afternoon, the Mercy College softball team fell to Dowling College in the ECC Playoffs, 13-1 in five innings. With the loss, the Mavericks are now eliminated from the postseason tournament and see their overall ledger finish at 26-25.

The big blow Mercy endured was in the top of the second frame when the Golden Lions scored seven runs to take a 7-0 lead. Dowling scored in each of the subsequent innings to post 13 runs before Mercy plated its lone run in the bottom of the fifth when senior Courtney Butler (Islip, N.Y.) had an RBI groundout.

For Dowling, Jamie Laird recorded a three-run homer in the second inning.

Mercy junior reliever Jessica Simpson (Gilbert, Ariz.) pitched two innings and gave up two runs, although both were unearned.
