Jones and Nyero Score as Field Hockey Comeback Falls Short against Manhattanville, 5-2.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2013) –Juniors Danielle Jones (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) , and Yolie Nyero (Carlisle, Pa. / Carlisle) scored to fuel a second half rally, which came up just short as the Mavericks fell to the Valiants of Manhanttanville College, 5-2. The Mavericks fall to 0-3, while the Valiants improve to 3-2.
Manhattanville came out from the start playing strong defense and had crisp movement of the ball. Manhattanville would score three times in the first half to give the Valiants a 3-0 lead at the break. The Valiants led 12-2 in total shots, and 9-1 in penalty corners taken.
After a fiery halftime speech from Coach Kinsley, Mercy would cut the Valiants lead to 3-1 on a penalty stroke shot by Jones at the 50th minute mark. Mercy would keep the momentum up as Nyero scored off a rebound shot from Nicole Bencsik (Telford, Pa. / Souderton Area) to cut the Valiants lead to just 3-2 at the 55th minute mark.
After another Manhattanville goal pushed the lead to 4-2, the Mavericks had two chances to close the gap to one. Jones missed on a shot after a penalty corner, and Bencsik failed to connect on wide open goal in the 62th minute.
One more insurance goal by the Valiants sealed the game for the Mavericks.
In the second half, the Mavericks improved their play by outshooting the Valiants 12-7, and took nine penalty corners as compared to just one in the first half. Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) had eight saves over 70 minutes of work in the cage.
Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday September 14th, as they host the Yellow Jackets of American International College in the home opener at 1:00 pm. The Mavericks and AIC will be participating in National Field Day on Saturday. There will be a 50/50 Raffle to raise money for USA Field Hockey.
