Three Unanswered Goals Push Women's Soccer Past NYIT
Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2013) – Three unanswered goals from three different players helped the Mercy College women's soccer team rally from an early 1-0 deficit, for a 3-1 victory over the Bears of NYIT. The Mavericks improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECC, while the Bears fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the ECC.
NYIT got on the scoreboard first, as midfielder Sina Windmuller scored in the 22nd minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks answered in the 40th minute, as senior Jackie Karras (Nesconset, N.Y. / Smithtown East) scored on a header, off a corner kick by senior Crystal Mena (Newport Beach, Calif. / Santiago Canyon College) and a cross from junior Abby Zielinski (Lancaster, Pa. / George Mason Univ. ) to knot the game up at 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, the Mavericks broke the tie as Jenna Patel (Cypress, Calif. / Kennedy) scored in the 53rd minute on a low cross from Jessica Carrillo (San Diego, Calif. / Hilltop) to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. The Mavericks added an insurance goal in the 77th minute as Viridiana Ortega (Compton, Calif. / John C. Fremont) scored on through ball over the defense by Alba Torres (Northridge, Calif. / Taft).
For Mercy, Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston ) had two saves in 90 minutes of work for the Mavericks. Mercy outshot NYIT 13-4 on total shots.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 as they host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at 12:00 p.m.
