White Posts 10th Double Digit Kill Match as Volleyball Falls to ECC Foe Molloy
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2013) – Junior Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev. / Douglas) posted her 10th match with double-digit kills as the Mercy College volleyball team fell to Molloy College in an East Coast Conference matchup on Thursday night, 3-0.
Mercy drops to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the ECC while Molloy improves to 6-7 (1-0).
The first set was an absolute thriller, as Molloy jumped out to an early 6-3 lead but Mercy quickly bounced back to take the 7-6 lead. The Lions regained the lead with a five-point run to make the score 16-13, but once again Mercy responded with four straight points to take a 17-16 lead. The teams traded points from there until Molloy led at set point, 24-23.
Senior Nicole Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow) skied for a monster kill to even the set at 24-24, but Molloy regained the edge thanks to a kill from sophomore Katie Gallagher. The Mavericks picked up two points on a pair of attack errors to hand junior McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) the serve at set point, but Gallagher took over for Molloy, smacking two kills after a Mercy attack error to close out the 28-26 win.
Mercy recovered to lead 6-2 early in the second set, but Molloy eventually managed another five-point run to take a one-point lead at 9-8. After the rivals traded points through a 14-15 score, Molloy won 11 of the final 14 points to take a two-set lead in the match.
The teams battled it out in the third set as well, with the score staying close all the way through to a 15-15 tie, but the Lions eventually stretched out a 25-18 win for the match victory.
White led the Mavericks with 13 kills while Ronan made 26 assists and senior Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif. / Pasadena City College) recorded 16 digs.
Gallagher led the Lions with 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage, while junior Kerry MacDonald and freshman Alley Stefanovski combined for 28 assists. Senior Euginia Anthony and sophomore Cassie Palmer recorded 19 and 10 digs, respectively.
Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they head to Chestnut Hill College (3-8) on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
