White Posts Pair of 19-Kill Efforts as Volleyball Starts Season in ESU Tournament

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 6, 2013) – Junior outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) posted a pair of 19-kill performances to kick off the season as the Mercy College volleyball team dropped two matches in the East Stroudsburg University Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Mercy took the opening game but fell to Le Moyne College, 3-1, in the opener and dropped a tight 3-2 contest to the hosts later in the day.

 

Le Moyne 3, Mercy 1

The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-18 victory in the first set despite posting a hitting percentage of .000.  The teams were more evenly matched in the second set, which Le Moyne took, 25-20, before the Dolphins exploded to win the third set, 25-12, behind a .619 hitting percentage.  The Mavericks were able to post their best hitting percentage (.333) of the match in the fourth set, but the Dolphins committed just one error while posting a .478 to take the match.

White led the Mavericks with 19 kills on a .333 hitting percentage and posted the double-double with 11 digs while also adding three service aces.  Junior setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made 35 assists, while senior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) recorded 13 digs.

Senior outside hitter Madison Snow (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led the Dolphins with 14 kills on a .522 hitting percentage and added four service aces, while junior setter Megan Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y.) made 29 assists and freshmen outside hitter Andrea Buchanan (Hamburg, N.Y.) and defensive specialist Annie Stoklosa (Victor, N.Y.) posted 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

 

East Stroudsburg 3, Mercy 2

The Mavericks jumped out to another early lead in Game Two against the hosts, limiting the Warriors to a .067 hitting percentage and taking the first set, 25-19.  East Stroudsburg responded with a dominant second set, committing just one error and posting a .500 hitting percentage en route to a 25-14 win to even the match.

Mercy bounced back in the third set, again stifling the East Stroudsburg attack to the tune of a .034 hitting percentage while the Mavericks posted a match-best .294 in the 25-17 win to regain the lead.  The critical fourth set was the most evenly contested of the match, but the Warriors squeaked away with a 25-21 win to force a fifth set, which they took with an overpowering eight-kill, no-error display, 15-8, to win the match.

White again led the Mavericks with 19 kills while senior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) added 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.  Ronan set for 32 assists and senior libero Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif.) made 14 digs as the Mavericks also combined for 10 total blocks, led by 2.5 from sophomore middle blocker Hana Brucaj (Shurb Oak, N.Y.).

Junior setter/outside hitter Annabelle Charlton (Landenberg, Pa.) led the Warriors with 18 kills, notching the triple-double with 17 assists and 10 digs.  Senior setter Allye Preziosi (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also posted a double-double, with 17 assists and 10 digs, while freshman outside hitter Sydney Galoozis (Newport News, Va.) added 11 kills and sophomore libero Maddie Hutchison (Lake Orion, Mich.) led the squad with 15 digs.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will play two more matches in the East Stroudsburg University Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 7.  Mercy will face Georgian Court University at 12:30 p.m. and the University of the Sciences at 4:30 p.m.
